What are Saga Squares?

Saga Squares are modular dungeon tiles for mapping environments in tabletop role playing games (TTRPG’s). They are made to be affordable, transportable, dynamic, and good-looking. Saga Squares sport a 25mm (~1 inch) grid etched into the play surface, making them suitable for 28mm scale miniatures typically used in tabletop role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons.

What are Saga Squares made of?

Saga Squares are made from real wood which has been sanded, stained, and finished, resulting in a pleasant aesthetic and a durable product without any crafting work on your part. Because they are made from wood, they are superior to typical medium density fiberboard (MDF) dungeon tiles. Saga Squares easily survive spills, don’t sport unsightly burn marks on the play surface, and don’t need special care to avoid damage.

What can I build?

We created Saga Squares because we wanted an affordable way to map all sorts of scenarios. Thus, a single package is enough to build a moderately-sized dungeon of rooms and twisting hallways spanning about three square feet of table space. Saga Squares do not have “walls” on them, making them fully modular and allowing them to take almost any configuration, from a city street to a large outdoor area.

Why would I buy these when I already have a battle mat?

Battle mats are great for large open areas, but not so helpful when you have to draw all the walls of a dungeon. Either you draw everything ahead of time and cover it with sticky notes, or you spend valuable game time drawing your scene. With Saga Squares, you spend less time drawing your dungeon and more time DM-ing your game. You can lay down the map as the players explore, adding that secret door or hallway only once players discover it. If players never know what’s ahead and which way is the “right” way, it makes diving your dungeon actually feel like exploration. Plus, it’s easy to just take inspiration from the tiles you have available and construct a dungeon on the fly.
